I was able to see the first three episodes of ITV's Lost in Austen, and was overall disappointed. Maybe I’m not the person to fully enjoy this type of program. The plot sounded a bit interesting but I have winced more than I’ve laughed.
While knowing there would be twists to the classic plot because of Amanda’s presence, I was hoping everyone would stay more in character than they have. And some of the twists have been too just for me. Caroline desiring “sisterly communion”? *gag* Jane marrying Mr. Collins?!?!?! Wrong wrong wrong! Jane is my favorite P&P character and I shall never forgive ITV and the writer(s) for what they’ve done to her. Poor dear Jane…
Amanda has been getting on my nerves. On the one hand she tries to make events go according to plan. Yet on the other hand she is truly shattered when Darcy breaks up with her (though I don’t know if she really loves him, the “romance” between them happened very quickly). It is hard for me to root for her.
Darcy just isn’t rocking my boat. I don’t know what he sees in Amanda — or her in him for that manner.
Mr. Collins is just plain weird/gross/creepy!
I had to get used to Bingley’s look after loving him as a red-head and a curly-haired chap. But he has grown on me and I think I like him pretty well. For shame though on treating Jane so unkindly at the ball! And turning him into a drunkard? No, no, no...
Mrs. Bennett is annoying. Yet as the series has gone on, I’ve been backing her in her attempt to take Amanda done.
Mr. Bennett I wish could have been in a traditional P&P miniseries. He is so good. My only problem with him is why he didn’t say anything before Jane’s marriage if he is so upset about her fate.
Surprise, surprise! Wickham has been my favorite character in LIA so far. A more good-natured, honorable Wickham there never was. I almost wish he would end up with Amanda.
Why couldn't have the new Persuasion, Mansfield Park, and Northanger Abbey films have been as long?
Moving to a more enjoyable note...
Yesterday I finally decided it was high time for me to borrow season one of The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries TV series (it aired in the 1970s, way before my time) from the library after hearing it call my name for the last few weeks. Tonight I watched four episodes: The Mystery of the Haunted House, The Mystery of Witches' Hollow, The Disappearing Floor, and The Flickering Torch Mystery, all featuring just Frank and Joe. To my great surprise, I liked them very, very much. The personalities of Joe and Frank had been tweaked a bit, yet I wasn't greatly bothered by the changes; Frank is still calm and smart, and Joe is still relaxed and funny. They bounced off each other very well and watched the others' back. They look very different from the book covers and what I pictured in my imagination, yet I quickly accepted their new look.
I loved Aunt Gurtrude, she was very much what I remembered from the books. Mr. Hardy was okay. Callie is still Frank's girlfriend but now works for Mr. Hardy and helps the boys on their cases. Chet was in one episode and...well...he was still scared about being on a case and loved food...yet he still didn't feel like Chet.
The Mystery of the Haunted House and The Flickering Torch Mystery were my favorite episodes. The latter had a guest star named Ricky Nelson and I was surprised he got to sing two songs during it. I wondered if he's been a really famous actor or singer. My mom told me Mr. Nelson had been a popular singer who had passed away in a plane crash. I thought it was very ironic because in the episode Mr. Nelson played a superstar singer whose life was saved by Frank and Joe when they prevented his private plane from taking off which had been rigged to explode on the way to London. ...Ironic and sad.
I am looking for to watching the rest of the episodes tomorrow.
