Edmund’s Balm

“Waaaaaah!”

Mrs. Pevensie’s soothing song was nearly drowned out by her daughter’s crying. Carefully she adjusted her hold on Lucy and continued to rock her as she walked up and down the nursery.

This week Lucy had been more fussy than usual, and again tonight she didn’t want to be put to bed. She thrashed about in her mother’s arms, tears streaming down her face as she cried.

Peter and Susan tried to help calm their sister by retrieving Lucy’s favorite toys from her crib and shelf. But the one-year-old would push away each item. Even when she was given to each of her siblings who cradled her carefully, gently, Lucy still did not cease crying. Eventually Peter gave her back to their mother. He and Susan watched their sister, sad that they could not help, and listened as Mrs. Pevensie resumed singing.

Edmund watched everything from the doorway. His teddy bear was tucked under one arm, and both of his hands were pressed against his ears. He really did not like it when Lucy cried. Sometimes he would play with her, and a moment later she would start to cry. And when she was wailing, as she was tonight, it frightened the little boy terribly. Lucy’s cries were so loud and long. Her crying never seemed to bother Peter and Susan; they would just try to cheer her up, usually with success.

“Waaaaaaaaah!”

Hugging his bear to his chest, Edmund stepped into the room, wincing as his sister’s cries became louder. Peter noticed him first and gave him a tired smile. Susan was frowning as she tracked her mother and sister from her spot on the floor. Uncertain, Edmund crept toward his mother and sister.

Mrs. Pevensie’s face brightened a little when she saw her son and carefully knelt when he reached her side. Lucy’s wails lessened a little when her eyes landed on Edmund. Slowly he held out his bear towards her. Tears still escaping down her red cheeks, his sister stopped crying and hiccupped. She did not notice Mrs. Pevensie carefully dry her face but blinked at the bear before stretching a hand toward the toy. Gently the boy laid his bear against her stomach, and she instantly attempted to wrap her short arm around it.

“Thank you, dear,” Mrs. Pevensie whispered, kissing Edmund on the forehead.

He smiled, tilted his head, and watched as Lucy yawned and sighed, rubbing her nose over the brown fur.

“Night, Lu,” Edmund said as his mother rose to put her to bed.

Lucy’s eyes had already slipped shut.
